Written by Dolly Alderton, the six-part series has been described as a faithful adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with Heartstopper director Euros Lyn at the helm. The newest footage from Pride and Prejudice confirms this, with certain phrases from the book - such as its iconic opening line - included in the trailer.

We see brief glimpses of the relationships between the characters, from Mrs Bennet - played by Olivia Colman - crying out for her husband to Louis Partridge as Mr Wickham, enquiring after Elizabeth’s acquaintance with Mr Darcy.

The trailer also highlights the heroine’s family, including Rufus Sewell’s Mr Bennet and Scottish actress Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, alongside the other Bennet sisters who are played by Hopey Parish, Hollie Avery and Rhea Norwood.

Comedian and actor Jamie Demetriou also gets to show off as Mr Collins for the first time, as he assures Mrs Bennet that “if there is one thing I am not in need of, it is counsel on how to charm a young lady”.

Finally, we get a look at Fiona Shaw as the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, following her role in this year’s Sense and Sensibility film.

Lowden will be the first Scottish actor to play Mr Darcy on screen. Speaking about the series with Netflix’s Tudum, he shared his thoughts on why the book remains so appealing so many years on.

He said: “It’s so joyous and beautiful and romantic. In a world where that takes a back seat, you need any excuse to get joy and romanticism. This is one of the greatest pieces of that kind of work there’s ever been.”

Pride and Prejudice will arrive on Netflix on Thursday, December 3.
