The new Audience Choice week tested the bakers in new ways, with one unlucky hopeful sent home following a series of challenges selected by fans.

In a Great British Bake Off first, this year’s contestants faced a series of tasks selected by the show’s audiences.

Kicking off Week 3 of the show in style, each baker was joined by a loved one for the signature cheesecake challenge. Some brought in their partners, while others chose their mothers, cousins and siblings meaning there were 22 bakers in the tent instead of 11.

The technical challenge was also brand new to the show. Each baker received a small pantry of mystery baking ingredients which they had to use to bake whatever their heart desired. (There was a lot of lemon involved.)

Then the final showstopper really lived up to its name, and the bakers had to create a wearable item of fashion - from fairy wings to hats and more.

Who won Star Baker?

There was some stiff competition for Star Baker on The Great British Bake Off last night (Tuesday, October 6).

Moyin earned the first Hollywood Handshake of series 17 for his signature cheesecake, though his “hat” cake didn’t much resemble something someone could wear for the showstopper. Connie was consistently great in this episode as well, really impressing with her showstopper, though some small issues let her down in the signature and technical.

However, with her strong performance throughout each challenge it was Clara who was named Star Baker during Week 3 of Bake Off. Her designer handbag which she presented as if she was walking down the runway.

As well as it’s attractive looks, the judges said her sponge was moist and buttery deeming the cake “exceptional”. Calling her future father-in-law with the excellent news, his response was so delighted - and gleefully sweary - that most of it was cut, only his frantic apology remaining.

Who left Bake Off last night?

Unfortunately, it was Shannon who left the tent following week 3 of the Great British Bake Off series 17.

The project planner and scheduler was unable to impress with her creations this week despite being a good baker. Her signature cheesecake, created alongside her mum, was “too intense” for the judges. She made a lemon drizzle cake for the surprise technical that was good, though slightly powdery.

However, the judges felt her showstopper - made of gingerbread and royal icing - was a bit of a let down. Though it was nice, if a little overbaked, the judges felt disappointed with how basic it was for the time she was given.

Shannon may have been the baker sent home, but she wasn’t the only one at risk. It was a bad week for Molly, whose sponge cakes just didn’t seem to turn out at all in the tent, though her attractive showstopper, which was modelled after the cap of F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, helped save her for another week despite being too dense and subtle in flavour.

Where can I catch up?

Fans of the Great British Bake Off can catch up with all of series 17 on the Channel 4 streaming service. As well as watching when you want, there will be re-runs of the new episodes on Channel 4 early in the morning on Thursday and at other times throughout the week.

When is the next episode of The Great British Bake Off out?

Episode four of Bake Off will air at 8pm on Channel 4, on Tuesday, October 13. As for what fans can expect, it is Bread Week on the show.

It will be decidedly unfriendly to any potential vampires with a garlic bread challenge teased at the end of this week’s episode.
