Films with links to Scotland scoop BAFTA nominations

I Swear is based on the life of John Davidson.

A film based on the life of a man from the Scottish Borders with Tourette Syndrome has scooped five BAFTA shortlist nominations.

I Swear, starring Robert Aramayo, which tells the story of John Davidson from Galashiels and is based on his book of the same name, is up for outstanding British film, best original screenplay and leading actor, as well as best supporting actor and casting.

The story details Mr Davidson’s experience of being bullied then expelled from school, the disintegration of his family, leaving home at 17, a series of arrests, his quest to find work, and the campaign he launched to support and educate others.

Meanwhile, Frankenstein, which was filmed mainly in Scotland, is up for eight awards.

One Battle After Another leads the nominations list with 14 nods, with Sinners, Hamnet and Marty Supreme following close behind.

Hamnet was on the shortlist for 11 BAFTAS - including a nomination for best actress for Jessie Buckley and a best supporting actor nomination for Paul Mescal, who missed out on a nomination in the same category at the Oscars.

No other film directed by a woman has received as many nominations in Baftas history - however Chloe Zhao is the only female on the five-strong shortlist.

Mescal will be up against Scottish actor Peter Mullan, who played Tommy Trotter in I Swear, which was released late last year.

Mr Davidson, who grew up in Galashiels, was 10 when his tics began. His condition progressed from blinks and jerks to involuntary rude and obscene shouting. He told how his compulsive behaviours included having to walk back 13 paces if he stepped on a crack in the pavement and having to kiss every 15th lamppost as he passed.

At 16, he came to national attention for the first time when the BBC made a documentary about him, John's Not Mad.
