This year’s Owner Managed Business 100 ranking highlights a group of under-the-radar Scottish firms generating strong profits through specialist positioning, operational efficiency and long-term investment rather than expansion at any cost.

Businesses operating in sectors including fishing, whisky, energy, construction and industrial technology feature prominently among the highest-margin companies in the dataset.

Nearly half of firms in the OMB 100 operate within a 5 to 10 per cent EBITDA margin band, underlining the importance of steady, repeatable performance across Scotland’s mid-market economy.

However, more than one fifth report margins above 15 per cent, with companies such as CSM Sustainable Energy, Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company and Antares Fishing posting margins above 50 per cent.

The figures also highlight the growing importance of productivity.

Adam Clark, group director at Arnold Clark, told a Scotsman Insider roundtable: “The key is consistency. Keep your head down, understand your customers and focus on doing the simple things properly.

“Businesses that stay disciplined and know their market will protect margins better when conditions get tougher. There are always new disruptors and pressures coming into the market, but firms that keep adapting and stay close to customers tend to come through it.”
