Popular steakhouse chain set to open third Edinburgh eatery after £2m revamp

“Given the restaurant’s strong performance in this region, we are eagerly anticipating the official opening later this year” – Ginny Uttley, Mitchells & Butlers

Edinburgh is set for another Miller & Carter steakhouse after one of the UK’s largest hospitality operators hit the acquisition trail.

Mitchells & Butlers has completed an off-market acquisition of the Charwood Bar and Grill on Buckstone Terrace in the capital from a private seller.

The group, whose other brands include Browns, All Bar One, Harvester, Nicholson’s and Vintage Inns, plans to reopen the 6,000-square-foot site later in 2026 as a Miller & Carter restaurant following a £2 million refurbishment. It will be the third Miller & Carter eatery in Edinburgh.

Property consultancy Savills, which advised Mitchells & Butlers on the deal, said the group was seeking “prime city centre and out-of-town opportunities” for various brands within its business.

John Menzies, director in the retail team at Savills Scotland, said: “This will be the third Miller & Carter in Edinburgh and its location to the south of the city, close to the Edinburgh bypass, will complement the existing city centre and west Edinburgh restaurants.

“The substantial renovations now underway will transform the business into one of the best new eateries in this district of Scotland’s capital city.”

He added: “We are also now actively seeking further bar and restaurant opportunities for Mitchells & Butlers throughout the country for a variety of its brands and we are very pleased to be helping the business achieve this ambition over the coming year.”

Ginny Uttley, senior acquisition manager at Mitchells & Butlers, said: “We are delighted to announce the acquisition of the Charwood, which marks a significant addition to the Miller & Carter brand in Scotland. Given the restaurant’s strong performance in this region, we are eagerly anticipating the official opening later this year.”

Christie & Co represented the seller with the sale of the property.

Last month, Mitchells & Butlers said it had traded “very strongly” across the festive season with like-for-like sales growth of 7.7 per cent over the core three-week period. That was supported by volume growth, and particularly over the five key festive days, which generated combined like-for-like sales growth of 10.5 per cent.

Through the first quarter, like-for-like sales strengthened across the brand portfolio, growing to 4.5 per cent, and remaining well ahead of the market, the group noted.

It told investors that sales growth had strengthened through the first quarter, and it remained confident in its ability to manage the £130m or so of year-on-year cost headwinds it expects to face this financial year, driven primarily by increased labour costs and food cost inflation.

Phil Urban, chief executive of Mitchells & Butlers, said: “We are pleased to report another exceptionally strong festive trading period, marked by numerous record-breaking performances across our brand portfolio and continued market outperformance in every segment.

“Sales growth on key festive dates was particularly strong, with Christmas Day setting a new all-time record for the highest sales day.

“We remain well positioned to further grow market share in the year ahead by leveraging the strength of our diverse portfolio of established brands and enviable estate locations,” he added.
