Why corporate away days remainan investment worth making

Real connections can be made over a shared activity, a relaxed drink or a friendly competition, writes Natasha McAllister

What was once a diary-filling exercise built around boardroom agendas and flipcharts has evolved now that traditional corporate away days have changed. As cost pressures and employee time constraints increase, businesses are seeking something far more intentional: an opportunity to reconnect teams, strengthen culture and create shared experiences that last beyond the working day.

At Deer Park Golf & Country Club, we’re seeing this shift first-hand. Businesses across Scotland are increasingly looking for venues that offer more than just meeting space. They want flexibility, character and crucially the chance to balance productivity with enjoyment.

Today’s corporate leaders understand that people connect differently outside of the traditional office environment. While formal presentations and strategy sessions remain important, a change of environment can be energising for productivity and there’s growing recognition that the real value often comes afterwards over a shared activity, a relaxed drink, or a friendly competition.

That’s where the appeal of multi-use venues has grown. Businesses want spaces that can host a morning meeting, a catered lunch, and an afternoon of team-building without the need to relocate. The convenience matters, but so does the atmosphere. A setting that feels less corporate and more social allows people to engage more naturally particularly for hybrid teams who may not see each other regularly.

At Deer Park, our location between Glasgow and Edinburgh, just off the M8, makes us an accessible choice for national and regional teams. But it’s the breadth of what’s available on site that resonates most. Experiences can be tailored to suit individual requirements including exclusive hire with personalised touches and company branding incorporated as desired. Alongside four flexible function suites suitable for groups from 20 to 200, businesses can choose from activities such as championship golf, tenpin bowling, darts or pool. These are all inclusive experiences that encourage interaction across roles and departments.

These lighter activities shouldn’t be underestimated. A game of bowling or a relaxed round of golf creates space for conversation, laughter and connection in a way formal sessions often can’t. For leadership teams, HR professionals and business owners, this blend of structure and spontaneity has become a powerful tool for wider company engagement.

Team milestones, company anniversaries, end-of-year gatherings and client appreciation events are all occasions worth celebrating and investing in your teams. Many businesses are recognising that taking time to reward teams is a key part of retention and wellbeing strategies.

On the other hand of corporate bookings, golf days remain an effective business networking opportunity as they provide dedicated quality time outside, away from office or work distractions. Our annual Deer Park Masters continues to be one of the most popular events in our calendar, combining competition, hospitality and networking in a relaxed environment. It’s a format that works exceptionally well for corporate groups offering structured activity, informal relationship-building and a premium experience that feels special without being overly formal. Increasingly, businesses are looking to recreate this model for their own teams or clients.

Throughout 2026, I believe live sport is also playing a growing role in corporate bookings. With a bumper sporting calendar on the horizon, venues that can combine private events with live broadcasts offer an added layer of appeal. Watching a major sporting moment together, whether as a team or with clients, creates shared memories and talking points that strengthen relationships.

Ultimately, the most successful corporate events today are those that feel human. They allow people to switch off from their inbox, engage with colleagues on a different level and leave feeling valued. As expectations continue to evolve, venues that can offer space, flexibility and experience under one roof will play an increasingly important role in how Scottish businesses come together.
