Revamped training facility delivers ultra realistic combat experience to Scots reservists

Army Reservists from 7th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (7 SCOTS) are the first soldiers to take part in urban warfare tactics training in a newly revamped, purpose-built facility in Dundee.

The upgraded site, located in Oliver Barracks, allows soldiers to sharpen their skills providing them with lifelike combat scenarios right in the heart of the city, using simulated ammunition (simunition).

The facility has been specially designed to offer realistic "force-on-force" training, using the latest equipment to mimic real battlefield conditions. From smoke and light effects to immersive noise simulations, Reservists experience the sights and sounds of combat without leaving Dundee. The investment, supported by the Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (HRFCA), ensures that soldiers are well-prepared for missions both in the UK and abroad.

The transformation of existing buildings at Oliver Barracks into this training ground is testament to the hard work of 7 SCOTS’ permanent staff. By meeting strict legal and safety standards, they have created a unique training space that’s not only for military use but also available to civilian agencies such as the emergency services.

Reservists in 7 SCOTS, many of whom live and work locally, train on weekends—balancing their civilian jobs with military commitments. Their dedication brings valuable skills both to their workplaces and the battlefield. Training at this facility helps them build confidence, leadership, and adaptability — qualities that are just as important in everyday life as they are in combat.

Lieutenant Colonel David Robertson, Commanding Officer 7 SCOTS, said: “Reservists bring specialist civilian capabilities that are essential both on and off the battlefield, while gaining transferable qualifications by training with the Army. The roles and tasks demanded of the Army Reserve continue to evolve, with more opportunities to enjoy the challenges that come with being a Reservist both in the UK and worldwide.”

Last year, 7 SCOTS took part in Exercise Rhino Heart in Germany—the largest Army Reserves exercise since the Cold War. They joined forces with NATO partners, testing their skills on the international stage. This year, the Battalion’s training will include live firing and learning lessons from recent conflicts, including insights from the war in Ukraine.

This year’s Annual Deployment Exercise will be in Otterburn, Northumberland, where Reservists will face some of the UK’s toughest terrain while developing their leadership and battlefield skills.
