Dundee Heritage in Pictures: Here are 23 fascinating photos of the Scottish city in the 1950s and 1960s

Life in the city looked very different over 55 years ago.

Dundee’s fortunes have always been tied to its location on the north bank of the Firth of Tay.

Originally established as a small port town in the Middle Ages, it came to prominence when King William the Lion granted Dundee to his younger brother David in the late 12th century, leading to it becoming a prosperous trading centre.

It was granted Royal Burgh status in 1292 then occupied by English troops (not for the last time) during the First War of Independence before being freed by Robert the Bruce in 1312.

By the middle of the 14th century it was one of Scotland’s most important towns and an important exporter of raw wool - an industry which would eventually evolve into the city’s huge textile mills of the 18th century.

Rising demand for cheaper and rogher fabrics led to the explosion of the jute industry, later joined by jam (James Keiller's and Sons’ marmalade in particular) and journalism (in the shape of publishers DC Thomson) - completing Dundee’s famous ‘three Js’.

The city’s industries fell into decline in the early 19th century, but were at least partially replaced in post-war times by light engineering companies such as Timex and NCR, with tech and computer companies following in the decades to come.

In recent years the city has been transformed by a regeneration of its waterfront - home to the ship Discovery that was built in Dundee before being taken to the Antarctic by Captain James Scott, only to eventually return as a tourist attraction.

The ship has been joined by a regenerated train stration, a new civic square, improved transport links, and - most famously - the new Victoria and Albert Museum which showcases the best in Scottish design.
