Dream job alert at Banjo and Ro’s 'remote and beautiful' Boat House cafe on Ulva
The charming eatery and shop will reopen in the spring, and the new TV presenter owners are looking for staff.
Long summer nights, the freshest seafood, happy customers and the most beautiful surrounding beckon for those lucky enough to land a job on a tiny Scottish island.
The Ulva Boathouse on Ulva, an island off Mull which has a permanent population of around 16, is to re-open later this spring under the stewardship of farmer and food producer, Sam Yates along with Banjo Beale, the 2022 winner of BBC 1’s Interior Design Masters and his husband Ro, a cheesemaker and distiller who is also a skilled handyman.
The couple have already restored the Ulva House as part of their show Banjo and Ro’s Grand Island Hotel on BBC Scotland and upgraded the look of the popular eatery.
The Boathouse, located in a charming whitewashed building by the shore, has been a pitstop for fresh seafood, homebaking, teas and coffees as well as provisions for years. It serves the small Ulva community, but also some of the 7,000 tourists who visit the island a year.

Now with it due to open in April, the team are looking for a chef and front of house staff to run the business.
The call for staff said: “Dream job alert. We’re looking for the perfect couple of people - a chef (or experienced cook) and a brilliant front-of-house person to join our island kitchen.
“Yes, it’s a beautiful, remote spot but it’s also a busy, fast-paced café with amazing produce on offer from local seafood to beef from the farm. Solid experience in both kitchen and customer service is a must.
“What’s on offer: Real Living Wage + tips, Accommodation available, Incredible location
“Proper, honest hospitality work with a great team. This is a seasonal job - from April to October. Expect sea air, strong coffee, and a service that keeps you on your toes.”
Ulva has been in community ownership since 2018 with the island now run by the North West Mull Community Woodland Company. North West Mull Community Woodland Company bought the island after its last owner, Jamie Howard, put the estate, which has been in his family for 70 years, on the market.
Banjo and Ro have leased Ulva House and are in the process of renovating the crumbling building, with dreams to open it as a boutique hotel - with the challenges and milestones being documented by the BBC.
The couple are also involved with the Boat House.
