Remembering when Easter eggs came in mugs - and where you can still buy them

As we head into the Easter weekend, some of us will be treating ourselves or loved ones to a chocolate egg or two. There might even be an egg hunt, or rolling painted eggs down a hill.

Most of the traditions of Easter have remained the same, but one trend seems to have disappeared.

Back in the 80s and 90s chocolate eggs seemingly all came in a mug. I still have a Terry’s Chocolate Orange one, but they were available for all kinds of brands of chocolate from Creme egg and Smarties to Yorkie.

Now they’re all but disappeared, with only the retro mugs in kitchens across the country proof that at some point, Easter wasn’t Easter without eating the chocolate egg with a cup of tea from its matching mug.

A spokesperson for Nestle explained why this trend has all but disappeared, saying: “Easter trends have changed over time. In the early 1900s it was common to see chocolate shaped fish, shoes and poultry before the now familiar egg shape took hold in the 1960s and branded chocolate Easter eggs first appeared on shelves.

“Pairing your favourite egg with a souvenir mug was common in the late 20th century and, in 2012, Nestlé was the first major confectioner to remove all plastic packaging from its Easter range.

“In recent years, chocolate eggs with 'inclusions' in the shell have become the latest trend and Nestlé's Incredible Eggs from brands including KitKat, Rowntree's and Yorkie are proving very popular with today's shoppers.”

Despite not being as readily available as they once were, people are reminiscing about the old Easter mugs online, and you can buy modern equivalents.

Where to buy an Easter egg in a mug

If you fancy a retro Easter then you can still get chocolate eggs in mugs in Asda, who are selling a Toffee Crisp Easter egg mug; a KitKat egg and mug and a Yorkie egg and mug all with chocolate egg and chocolates.

Web shop Pineapple Retro has had 80s kids Easter mugs in stock or you can try eBay or Etsy.
