Edinburgh trams suspension 'due to ice on overhead equipment lines'

A suspension of Edinburgh’s tram services was caused by a build up of ice on overhead equipment lines, according to a spokesperson for the network.

At around 6.20am on Thursday, Edinburgh Trams said there were delays due to an earlier “technical failure”, with services suspended shortly after.

Services remained suspended for several hours with ticket acceptance in place with Lothian Buses.

As reported by Deadline News, Edinburgh Trams has now confirmed that services were suspended due to frozen overhead lines.

Temperatures dipped to -1C in the Capital in the early hours of Thursday morning, just as the first tram services were due to leave Gogar depot. The network was able to resume operations once the ice was cleared, but there were some delays experienced for much of the day.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Trams said: “A sudden, unseasonal plummet in overnight temperatures resulted in a build-up of ice on the Overhead Line Equipment, which caused traction issues this morning on the first trams to leave the depot. Service was suspended for around 2 hours.

“Once the ice was cleared, tram operations resumed, and trams are now running with some minor delays across the network.

“We’d like to reiterate our apology for the disruption caused to all passengers.”
