Glasgow city centre roads closed as Celtic fans celebrate league title win on Trongate

Celtic fans gatther at Gallowgate and Trongate after dramatic end to the season sees Martin O’Neill’s team win the league title on the final day with a 3-1 win over Hearts.

Crowds of Celtic fans have gathered in Glasgow city centre with Police Scotland closing roads to traffic. Cordons were put in place as part of the policing plan put in place in anticipation of Celtic securing the league title.

Police Scotland said: “A number of roads are closed in the Trongate area of Glasgow ahead of anticipated title celebrations by Celtic supporters. The Gallowgate is closed between Watson Street and High Street. London Road is closed between Glasgow Cross and James Morrison Street.

“High Street and Saltmarket remain open. People are asked to avoid the Trongate area where possible.

“We have a comprehensive policing plan in place which is focused on ensuring public safety and minimising disruption to the public.

“Anyone planning to visit Glasgow City Centre today should be aware it will be much busier than normal, with increased use of public transport.

“Please plan your travel in advance and thank you for your patience.”

In a statement prior to the final day of the season, Celtic urged fans to be “mindful of the challenges which have been faced by Glasgow City Council previously’” and confirmed meetings had taken place with Glasgow City Council.

A statement issued to GlasgowWorld said: “We understand that the pressure placed on the city on such occasions is immense. We know there have been instances in the past which have proved difficult for the local community in terms of movement, obstructions and impact on emergency services.

“Glasgow City Council has committed to working together with football clubs on facilitating potential celebrations which would be meaningful to fans and less impactful on communities. Until these options can be delivered, we need to play our role in trying to relieve some of the pressures. We are aware of some of the issues which have arisen, many of which have led to serious safety concerns.”

“If successful on Saturday, we would absolutely want our fans to enjoy their own celebrations, but given these events and the wider logistics, we would therefore discourage supporters from attending gatherings in the city centre this weekend, where there is no safety management in place and which have such a high impact on city.

“The pressure which is placed on the city and its services clearly will be enormous and we want to do all we can to support the city.”
