Iconic Back To The Future DeLorean to star at free Edinburgh outdoor cinema event

Movie fans are in for a proper treat this weekend

Fans of Back to the Future films are in for a very special treat in Edinburgh this weekend as one of the UK’s largest free outdoor cinema events returns for its 15th year.

Square Cinema will take over the gardens at St Andrew Square from Friday to Sunday, offering a packed line-up of Hollywood blockbusters, family favourites and cult classics in a relaxed, picnic-style setting.

A major highlight for film fans will be a rare appearance by the famous DeLorean from the Back to the Future franchise, which will be on display to the public on Saturday.

Its appearance ties in with a screening of the 1985 sci-fi classic that evening, as well as the upcoming run of Back to the Future The Musical at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

Pam Aldred, head of marketing and communications at the theatre, said: "We're thrilled to have the chance to bring such an iconic piece of film history to our stage this festive season... and to give Square Cinema audiences a rare up-close glimpse of what's to come."

The three-day festival kicks off on Friday with a dedicated 'Swayze-Night', featuring back-to-back screenings of The Outsiders, Dirty Dancing, and a 35th-anniversary showing of Point Break.

Saturday and Sunday will cater to family audiences with daytime screenings including Zootropolis 2, Wicked: For Good, and the recent live-action remakes of Lilo & Stitch and How To Train Your Dragon.

The programme then shifts to evening blockbusters and anniversary events, including F1 – The Movie, multi-Oscar winner One Battle After Another, a 40th-anniversary showing of Labyrinth, and a 15th-anniversary screening of Bridesmaids.

Emily Campbell Johnston, from event funder Essential Edinburgh, said the festival has evolved into a "wonderful communal film experience".

She added: "Square Cinema is a fantastic event that truly has something for absolutely everyone, come rain or shine – and being Edinburgh sometimes both at the same time."

Entry to the event, which is headline sponsored by LNER, remains completely free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. All films will be shown with subtitles, and select screenings will feature audio descriptions to ensure inclusivity.
