Advances in medical science mean that, in many cases, cancer is now condition that can be lived with for years

Scotland, Celtic and Liverpool footballing great Sir Kenny Dalglish did not mean to reveal he was being treated for cancer. However, after an inadvertent social media post saw the news enter the public domain, he handled the situation with typical humour.

“Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well. Ideally, this would have remained private because that's the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand,” the 75-year-old said. He thanked the “wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves."

His latter sentiments will be shared by cancer patients across the country. Thanks to advances in medical science, a disease that was once a death sentence is now, for many, a condition that can be lived with for years. Dalglish's wife Marina was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 but recovered after treatment, later founding the Marina Dalglish Appeal to fund cancer treatment equipment.

All Scotland will wish him well. And what better way to do that, than to make a donation?
