Fresh evidence to support The Scotsman's call for Scotland to become a 'sporting nation'

Exercise’s effect on mental health underlines the need for everyone to be able to participate in sport

As regular readers will know, we are thoroughly convinced that Scotland would become a much better place if only our leaders would launch a sustained campaign to turn this country into a ‘sporting nation’ in which everyone, young and old, is encouraged to have a sport of their own.

Now a review of a number of different studies has found exercise can have a moderate effect in reducing depression, which is comparable to psychological therapies. It may also have a similar effect to antidepressants, although researchers said there was low certainty about this finding.

Professor Andrew Clegg said exercise “appears to be a safe and accessible option for helping to manage symptoms of depression” that “works well for some people, but not everyone”.

Clearly, no one suffering from depression should abandon any course of therapy or treatment. However, this adds to the weight of evidence about just how good exercise is for our mental, as well as our physical, health.

Making Scotland a happier, healthier nation is surely a goal that all politicians can support. We await the Scottish Parliament election manifesto commitments with interest.
