The love affair between the Tartan Army and the people of Boston has been one of the highlights of the World Cup, with Scotland fans winning over their American hosts with good-natured banter and their playful habit of crowning statues with traffic cones.

Determined to keep the flame alive, Andrew Dobbie has now flown from Glasgow to Boston with a special traffic cone, which travelled in its own first-class seat, as a symbol of friendship. It features the slogan “No Boston, No Party”, illustrations of the two cities, and is fitted with a chip to enable people to donate to mental health charities in Scotland and Massachusetts.

“We can either look back on this summer as a happy memory,” said Dobbie, “or use it as a catalyst to build something lasting between Glasgow and Boston through culture, tourism, trade and creativity – we want this to be more than a summer fling.” Boston mayor Michelle Wu said the city was “honoured to receive this hallowed cone”.

Tartan Army take a bow. Your campaign of winning friends around the world is something truly special. Scottish ‘soft power’ has never been so potent.
