Scotland to play World Cup games in Boston park with jerseys for goalposts?

Fifa has not yet secured permission to play seven games, including two of Scotland’s, at a stadium in Foxborough near Boston

All set for the World Cup? It’s Scotland’s first in nearly 30 years, don’t you know (for the men, anyway). Tickets booked, accommodation sorted, ten-point action plan in event of arrest by ICE for having a “funny accent” laminated? Great, it’ll all be fine then.

Or will it? Astonishingly, with less than 100 days to go, Scotland’s games against Haiti and Morocco have been thrown into doubt by an unseemly row between Fifa and the town of Foxborough, near Boston.

The town authorities are refusing to approve Fifa’s licence to play seven games, including Scotland’s, at MLS team New England Revolution’s stadium, unless it is paid $7.8 million to cover security costs.

According to Mike Loynd, of Boston Soccer 2026, which is working with Fifa, a deal will be struck before the town’s March 17 deadline although he added “what we have now is a hard ten days of work”.

Our World Cup dream to be scuppered by a row over policing? Not a chance, that’s not happening. Even if it’s down the park with jerseys for goalposts, Scotland are playing. Fifa, get it sorted!
