The Ukraine War is a matter of good versus evil

US aid to Ukraine has fallen by a shameful 99 per cent under Donald Trump, but Europe has stepped into the breach and must continue to do so

Today is the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is also just over a year since Donald Trump became US President.

According to research by the Kiel Institut, a German think tank, US aid fell by a shameful 99 per cent in 2025. Fortunately, Europe dramatically increased its support so that the total received by Ukraine remained almost the same. Northern and western Europe countries, including the UK, provided 95 per cent of all aid, Kiel found.

So far, the UK has committed up to £21.8 billion in military, financial and other assistance and has pledged to maintain military funding of £3bn a year “for as long as it takes”, with Keir Starmer continuing the policy of staunch support for President Volodymyr Zelensky that was begun by Boris Johnson’s Conservative government in the invasion’s immediate aftermath.

‘A just and lasting peace’

Starmer will today convene a virtual meeting of the “coalition of the willing” to discuss further help for Kyiv. And, in a statement, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "... our message to the Ukrainian people is simple: Britain is with you, stronger than ever. The war remains the defining security challenge of our age. It is about whether Ukrainian and European freedom will endure. We will stand with Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is secured, and beyond.”

We should all be very clear why taking a such a strong stance matters. Indeed, the only question should be whether we are actually doing enough.

If Putin is allowed to win in Ukraine, it would be a tragedy for everyone living there. He would not stop there. Emboldened by such a victory, he would only seek further conquests as he attempts to rebuild the Soviet empire.

Russia’s neighbours know this all too well, which is the reason why Poland last week formally left an international convention banning anti-personnel mines, which are to be used to defend its borders.

Trump’s hostility towards Zelensky and his closeness to the murderous Putin should never persuade us to abandon this fight for freedom and against tyranny. This is, quite simply, a matter of good versus evil and Ukraine must prevail.
