Why Oasis's return to Scotland could see them finally win 'Battle of Britpop'

Will Oasis’s gigs at Celtic Park prove to be as seismic as their Murrayfield performances?

When Oasis reunited for a comeback tour in 2025, their concert at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium turned out to be the most earth-shaking gig in the city in 20 years. The British Geological Survey’s seismometers recorded a bigger reading during their performance of Cigarettes and Alcohol, as fans danced along, than any song played by the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon or Taylor Swift.

Now the band has just announced they will be returning to Scotland with five nights at Celtic Park in May next year, as part of a world tour including Manchester, Barcelona, Paris, Rome and Boston.

In August 1995, Oasis were defeated in the so-called Battle of Britpop, when Blur’s song Country House was released on the same day as their single Roll With It and the ‘hipster Southerners’ managed to beat the ‘no-nonsense Northerners’ to number one.

However, while Oasis lost that encounter, they appear to be well on their way to going down in history as Britpop’s biggest, loudest and, arguably, best band. Last time was truly seismic. Let’s hope the earth moves for Glasgow too.
