Trans MSP Q Manivannan escorted through Holyrood by security over safety concerns

The Scottish Greens say Q Manivannan has been subjected to high levels of abuse in the days after being elected

Trans MSP Q Manivannan had to be escorted through parliament by security guards after days of abuse following their election.

Manivannan was seen alongside official parliament security staff and staff from the Scottish Greens as they walked from the MSPs’ office block to the debating chamber, where they were officially sworn in.

A party source told The Scotsman the parliament’s security team had approached Manivannan directly to suggest increased security measures because of the backlash they have received.

It is understood this measure was only in place for one day, as a lot of visitors were in the private parts of the parliament due to the swearing-in ceremony.

Manivannan is currently in Scotland on a student visa and will soon transition on to a graduate visa. This will allow them to work full-time in Scotland for three years.

They are planning to apply for a global talent visa, which if granted would allow them to serve out the full five-year parliamentary term.

There have been media reports in recent days speculating that Manivannan could be deported or serve as an MSP in India if this visa is not granted.

If their visa ends before the parliament term ends, a by-election would not be triggered as they were elected on a list seat - they would automatically be replaced by the next Scottish Green MSP on the Edinburgh and Lothians East list.

The Scottish Conservatives had also called for the Home Office to intervene on the matter. However, the parliament voted to amend the election rules in 2024, allowing those on student visas to stand for election.

The Scottish Parliament said it would not comment on day-to-day security arrangements.
