Pygmy hippo at Edinburgh Zoo pregnant again less than two years after birth of famous calf Haggis
Gloria the pygmy hippo is expecting another baby calf
Edinburgh Zoo has announced pygmy hippo Gloria is expecting another calf - less than two years after her baby Haggis rose to fame across the globe.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) confirmed the news today after teasing their followers on social media, posting videos hinting that one of the zoo’s animals was expecting.
Veterinary staff predict Gloria will give birth sometime in August, with the calf being her first since welcoming internet sensation Haggis in 2024. The pygmy hippo became a star thanks to her ‘sassy’ personality and viral videos which attracted fans from all around the world.
Darren McGarry, RZSS head of animal care, said staff were delighted by the news. He said: "We are all really made up for Gloria, who is positively glowing at the minute. The calf will have a great start in life because Gloria is a really caring, attentive and experienced mum.
“I am chuffed for dad Otto too. His job is basically done now, but we have given him a few treats to say, ‘well done’."

As Gloria enters the final stages of her pregnancy, she will remain in a private off-show habitat where keepers and vets can closely monitor her and ensure she has plenty of rest ahead of the birth. Visitors to the zoo will still be able to see Otto while they wait for the new arrival.
Mr McGarry, who has worked with pygmy hippos for decades, said it is heart-warming to see so much excitement surrounding the species.
He added: “Pygmy hippos are a very special animal, and I can tell you news like this never, ever gets old."
