Drivers in Edinburgh are set to face weeks of travel disruption as roadworks get underway on one of the city's busiest roads.

Maintenance works on Queen Street between North Charlotte Street and North St David Street will be underway from today (Monday, 22 October) through to November 17.

The works include carriageway resurfacing, pedestrian crossing upgrades and ironwork repairs.

During the first week of works, there will be daytime off-peak lane closures, followed by weeknight carriageway closures from week 2 until week.

Single lane traffic will be maintained and adjoining roads will be closed when work takes place at junctions.

Queen Street Gardens East was closed off entirely on Monday morning, sparking a period of traffic chaos with a number of diversions in place for all vehicles and buses, despite the council stating on their website that it would only close during off-peak hours.

The early closure resulted in “notable” delays with one user claiming traffic was at a “standstill” on Heriot Row.

Drivers have been urged to leave plenty of time for travel or find an alternative route while the works are underway, as further delays are expected.
