Saltcoats: Glasgow trains cancelled as waves 'crash over sea wall' affecting overhead lines

Disruption is expected to last until into the afternoon.

Several Glasgow trains have been cancelled due to waves crashing over a sea wall affecting overhead lines.

On Wednesday morning, ScotRail said weather conditions are causing sea water to "overtop" the sea wall defences in the Saltcoats area, on the west coast of North Ayrshire, meaning trains between Kilwinning, Ardrossan and Largs have been cancelled.

The train operators said services between Glasgow and Largs and Ardrossan will terminate and start from Kilwinning.

Network shared footage of the scenes from Saltcoats showing giant waves crashing over the wall and onto the train track.

The update read: “Here are the conditions at Saltcoats on the Glasgow Central - Largs/Ardrossan line just now, with waves crashing over the sea wall, affecting our overhead lines.

“We're working w/ @ScotRail to withdraw services between Kilwinning and Largs/Ardrossan until conditions improve.

In a reply to a passenger on X, a spokesperson explained how waves hitting the overhead line equipment can “trip” the power, risking damaging the lines.

Disruption is expected to last until around 1pm.
