New Edinburgh Airport chief urged to 'improve urgently' passenger experience after complaints

Mark Johnson has been urged to make travelling to Scotland’s busiest airport cheaper for passengers.
The new chief of Edinburgh Airport has been told to “improve urgently” the experience of passengers as an immediate priority.
The appeal comes after former managing director of Glasgow Airport, Mark Johnson, was appointed the new chief executive of Edinburgh Airport.

Mr Johnson is currently the chief operating officer at London Gatwick Airport and will take up the role on October 1, replacing Gordon Dewar.
But calls have been made for Mr Johnson to prioritise the experience of passengers at the airport, following frustration at some elements of operations.
Conservative MSP for the Lothian, Miles Briggs, said: “Edinburgh Airport is crucial for the capital’s economy and brings people from around the world to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
“However, many passengers’ experience has fallen far short of the standard they would expect recently, and this must improve urgently.”

He added: “The new boss should make it clear this is a top priority for him to ensure the airport remains a top choice for passengers as well as attracting investment for new routes, linking Edinburgh with other major destinations.
“I also hope steps will be taken to look at how we reduce costs for people travelling to the airport with the increases in drop-off costs significantly adding to motorist and taxi journeys.”
Lib Dem Edinburgh West MP, Christine Jardine, said: “Edinburgh Airport is a major employer in my constituency and the gateway for so many travellers arriving in Scotland.

"There are clearly areas where there is room for improvement so I was pleased to see the recent commitment to the airport's largest-ever capital investment programme.”
She added: "I want to see rapid improvements for passengers in those key arrival and departure areas where Edinburgh risks falling behind global standards.
“This isn't just going to be a lick of paint but serious investment in making Edinburgh airport fit for the future."
The appeal comes after research by consumer group Which? found Edinburgh Airport was rated the worst of 27 across the UK for baggage waiting times - and fifth worst overall.
That came after regular travellers levelled criticism on the airport, including former SNP MP Douglas Chapman, who branded the facility a “disorganised, unwelcoming shambles”.
The airport is ramping up major development plans to cope with booming passenger numbers, which are expected to cost the best part of £1 billion.
The airport’s expansion, which it described as the “most ambitious capital investment programme in its history” will involve extending the passenger terminal, with more departure gates and aircraft parking stands.
Mr Johnston said he was “incredibly proud” to be appointed in his new position.
He added: “It's also an exciting time to be joining the airport as it embarks on the largest ever capital investment programme in its history. Its continued growth is a testament to the strength of the highly skilled team in place, and whose reputation is recognised across the industry.
“I'm looking forward to working alongside them as we continue to grow, strengthen connectivity and play our part in supporting Scotland and the UK's economy.
"I also want to pay tribute to Gordon Dewar, who leaves behind an exceptionally strong business and an airport that has gone from strength to strength under his leadership. He is someone I have always respected and admired and it's a real privilege to be returning to my home city to build on that success at Scotland's busiest airport."
