Scotland weather: Flood alerts for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire as Met Office issues new rain warning

Several flood warnings are in place across Scotland.

The Met Office has issued a fresh weather warning for rain affecting north-east Scotland, with experts warning flooding is “likely” over the coming days.

The new yellow alert covers Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and is in force from 2am on Wednesday until midday.

This is on top of the wider yellow weather warning for snow across large parts of central and north-eastern Scotland in place from 12am until 3pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The Met Office warning said: “Precipitation across Aberdeenshire will turn heavier into the early part of Wednesday morning before easing later in the day.

“Much of this will fall as snow inland above 100–200 metres, but lower‑lying and coastal areas will see further rainfall totals of 10–20 mm.

“Given the already saturated ground following a prolonged period of unsettled weather, this additional rainfall will bring a risk of flooding in places along with some difficult driving conditions.”

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also warned of potential flooding on Scotland’s north-east coast on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

It said “localised” flooding in coastal areas is likely in Orkney, the Moray Firth and the east coast at times of high tide, and parts of Aberdeenshire, Tayside and Angus could see river flooding on Wednesday and into Thursday.

Five flood warnings and five less severe flood alerts are currently in place across Scotland, including in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

New Met Office statistics showed that the east of Scotland experienced one of its wettest Januarys on record. Aboyne in Aberdeenshire had nearly four times its January average rainfall of 68.9mm.

Last week, Storm Chandra brought heavy rain and strong winds across much of Scotland causing widespread disruption.

Glen Ample in Stirlingshire recorded 66.6 mm of rain during the storm- while new January records for daily rainfall were set in the south of England.

Several roads in Scotland were closed due to snowfall and flooding, while a number of train routes were blocked due to fallen trees.
