Scotland thunderstorm warning: Met Office forecast for Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Perth and more as warnings issued
The Met Office has issued two thunderstorm warnings for Scotland.
A Met Office weather warning for thunderstorms is in place for parts of Scotland today (4 August 2026).
The yellow thunderstorm warning will be in place for Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth and Aberdeen until 10pm.
The warning, which has a very low likelihood and a medium impact, reads: “Thunderstorms and heavy showers may lead to some disruption this afternoon and evening.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.
“Heavy and thundery showers are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the early evening. Whilst not all places in the warning area will see heavy showers, accumulations of 15 to 20 mm are possible in 1 hour and 30 to 40 mm in 3 hours or so where they do occur. Hail and lightning will be additional hazards.”
A second thunderstorm warning will be in force for Aberdeen, Aviemore and Pitlochry from 10am to 9pm on Wednesday 5 August.

The yellow thunderstorm warning, which again has a very low likelihood and a medium impact, reads: “Slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some disruption.
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
“Heavy, slow-moving showers and some thunderstorms are likely to break out from late morning. Along with lightning, gusty winds and some hail, these will have the potential to give 20-30mm of rain in 1-2 hours and perhaps 50mm in a few places over 3-6 hours. This may lead to localised flash flooding, and impacts to the transport network.”
