Thousands of people gathered atop the seven hill of Edinburgh yesterday (Wednesday, August 12) to catch the biggest solar eclipse Scotland had seen in more than a quarter of a century.
Around 90 per cent of the sun was obscured by the moon at around 7.06pm in what was billed as a ‘once in a generation’ event that lasted from around 6-8.15pm.
Eclipse viewing glasses were sold out everywhere, kitchen drawers were raided for colanders and people got crafty making their own pinhole projectors.
When the big event arrived cloud sadly obscured much of the sky, with only glimpses of the eclipse in between.
But the crowds still had fun in the balmy temperatures and things could have been worse - in Reykjavik, where thousands had travelled at no small expense to experience totality, it rained all evening.
Here are 13 pictures of the crowds in Edinburgh looking to the skies.
