Following the success of our inaugural event, the Highlands & Islands Apprenticeship Awards are back.

Organised by The Scotsman, the event celebrates the people powering the region’s skills pipeline — recognising apprentices, employers, and training providers who are shaping the workforce of tomorrow.

With 14 award categories, the awards shine a spotlight on outstanding achievement across the apprenticeship landscape, celebrating the individuals and organisations demonstrating excellence, commitment and impact. The event brings together apprentices at all stages of their journey, alongside businesses and training providers who are investing in skills development and creating long-term career opportunities across the Highlands & Islands.

Speaking about their support for the awards, Mike Campbell, RSE Apprenticeship Programme Manager, said: “Having been proud winners of the Large Employer Award at the Highlands and Islands Apprenticeship Awards last year, we are delighted to sponsor the SME Business Award for 2026. Although RSE has grown to establish itself as a large employer, our roots are firmly in the Highlands, and we recognise the vital role that small and medium-sized businesses play in supporting local communities, creating opportunities, and driving the regional economy. Sponsoring this award is a meaningful way for us to celebrate the outstanding contribution SMEs make to apprenticeships and skills development across the Highlands and Islands.”

In 2025 our SME Employer of the Year winner was Ri Cruden Limited.

RI Cruden is a leading SME employer of apprentices in the Highlands, with a 20-year legacy of nurturing talent and fostering careers in the mechanical, electrical, and renewable services sectors. Apprenticeships are central to RI Cruden’s growth, with over 25% of the workforce currently in training. The company’s award-winning program spans four-year pathways, offering bespoke, future-focused training that goes beyond standard courses—emphasizing renewable technologies like Solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging. Apprentices benefit from hands-on experience on major projects, access to advanced facilities such as a state-of-the-art prefabrication workshop, and participation in major industry events. With a 90% retention rate, many apprentices progress to key roles within the business. RI Cruden’s inclusive approach supports diversity, exemplified by role models like Cosima Kramer-Lomax. Recognised nationally as Net Zero Employer of the Year, RI Cruden sets the benchmark for skills development and sustainability in the industry.
