St Raphael’s and Marian House Edinburgh

Discover a home from home in the heart of Edinburgh, from a charity that’s spent 80 years caring for generations.

A rare opportunity for respite or long term nursing care in two of Edinburgh’s longest established settings has come up.

St Raphael’s and Marian House in The Grange, Edinburgh, both run by Viewpoint, have limited availability for immediate entry, with individual ensuite rooms available.

There’s a real family feel in these two beautiful homes, where the team aims to create joy in later years. Both homes are run by Viewpoint, a charitable organisation which marks its 80th anniversary next year and offers a range of excellent care solutions through two care homes, as well as operating as a housing association. Viewpoint looks after its staff well, which means they tend to stay longer – and their love of the job is reflected in the way they look after all residents, putting them at the heart of everything they do.

Researching a nursing home in Edinburgh

The team at Viewpoint know that when it comes to choosing residential care for a loved one, it is a difficult decision.

For many people, the first port of call is carehome.co.uk, where Marian House has nothing but five star reviews, and people talk about St Raphael’s in glowing terms.

The Care Inspectorate, which regulates the industry, visited both homes as recently as 2025 and rated them very good or good in all sections assessed.

With 63 rooms in one, and 35 rooms in the sister home next door, both are staffed 24 hours a day by registered nursing staff and highly experienced care assistants.

How to choose

People find it an emotional and difficult journey to decide when care is right for themselves or their loved ones. Our respite care option allows people to move in for a short period to decide for themselves if our care setting is for them.. And because we have been in Edinburgh for so long, people often find they know other residents when they move in, can still visit places they are familiar with and quickly feel right at home. And we treat every resident exactly how we would treat our own family.

Jean Gray, CEO of Viewpoint

For those without an immediate friendship or family circle in Edinburgh, the teams at Marian House and St R’s, as it is affectionately known, step in to make sure they are included, feel comfortable and hopefully are right at home from day one.

Jean added: “It is well documented that isolation, and in particular social isolation, is a killer. For our residents this is their home. They have choices in what they do when they are here . Our staff get to know our residents well, listen to them, greet them with a friendly smile throughout the day, and encourage them to take part in social activities. Every one of our residents whether having been with us for a while or new are a vital part of our care community.”

Different care needs

Whether you simply need a two week break for a much needed family holiday, a short-term introduction to nursing care, long term care or specialist dementia care, Marian House and St R’s can deliver what you need when you need it.

Working for families

The Viewpoint team want relatives to genuinely feel they are visiting their loved ones in their own home. Family pets are welcome visitors by arrangement, and the extended family can join their loved one for lunch or dinner in the dining room or for a celebration maybe a drink from the bar. Marking a special occasion? Larger group visits can be planned for those milestone moments with a more private setting indoors or in the beautiful gardens, subject to of course the Scottish weather!

Situated in the Grange and handy for visitors from Morningside, Bruntsfield and across the city, this is person-centred care in the heart of Edinburgh. With good transport links and free parking on site, supporting your loved one has never been easier.

Testimonials

David, whose sister lives at St Raphael’s, said: “My sister developed early onset dementia and moved into St Raphael’s in 2015. The level of loving care she was provided with exceeded anything I could have wished for. She was initially living in the specialist dementia wing, where the staff fully understood her condition and treated her with dignity and understanding. As her condition worsened she moved into the main house where she has lived for the last five years. Not once has she experienced any bed sores, despite being bed ridden for the last few years. I cannot thank the nursing staff enough for what this means for Chris and her family.”

And a daughter whose mum is in Marian House wrote: “My mum has been in Marian house for 3.5 years and has been very well cared for while she has been there. From the moment she arrived the staff took the time to get to know her personally and to tend to her individual needs. These needs have changed over the time she has been there, and the care and attention of the staff has adapted accordingly. Her room is warm and comfortable and the fact that she was able to bring some of her own furniture and have her own pictures on the wall really helped her to settle in and feel at home. The garden is a real bonus. Knowing that my mum is safe and so well cared for makes it so much easier for us as a family.”

Happy homes filled with laughter

These are not just nursing homes, they ARE home. Residents embrace their hobbies and social life; have friends round for a cuppa, enjoy dancing to a range of different musicians and singers, film afternoons, or spend more creative time in the craft café, run on site by Impact Arts.

Available now

Good quality care is hard to find when you need it, but both homes currently have a limited number of rooms available for near immediate entry.
