Chris Gotterup recalls 'amazing' career-changing Genesis Scottish Open week

American confirms Rolex Series title defence at The Renaissance Club in July

Chris Gotterup, who sprang a bit of a surprise when winning the Genesis Scottish Open last year, is returning to defend his title in East Lothian this summer and will be doing so as one of the game’s new wave of stars.

Since triumphing in the Rolex Series event at The Renaissance Club last July, the American has claimed two further titles on the PGA Tour - the Sony Open in Hawaii and WM Phoenix Open.

On the back of a stellar run of form, Gotterup has broken into the world’s top ten and is already looking forward to being back on Scotland’s Golf Coast later this year.

“Last year was very special - the way I hung in there on Sunday, winning the Genesis Scottish Open title on my debut, lifting a trophy in the home of golf, all made it an amazing week,” said the 26-year-old.

In addition to his two wins already this year on the US circuit, Gotterup hit the longest drive in TGL history with a 374-yard monster playing as a reserve for the injured Justin Thomas for Atlanta Drive.

“I’ve had a great start to the season so far, and I can’t wait to get back to the Renaissance Club to defend my title in July,” he added.

Gotterup is the second player after career grand slam winner Rory McIlroy to commit to this year’s $9 million event, which takes place on 9-12 July and is set to attract another world-class field.

During last year’s Genesis Scottish Open, Gotterup played a game one evening at North Berwick along with close friend Jacob Bridgeman, who won the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles on Sunday to climb to 20th in the world rankings.
