David Scott leads GB&I to thumping win in 32nd PGA Cup in Ireland

Graeme Robertson is standabout player for home side in victory over Americans at The K Club in Ireland

Great Britain & Ireland, captained by David Scott, stormed to a commanding victory in the 32nd PGA Cup at The K Club in Ireland.

The home side triumphed 16.5-9.5 over the US at the County Kildare venue to claim the Llandudno Trophy for just the eighth time and first time since 2017.

Scott’s side contained two PGA Scotland players in Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson and Gavin Hay, who is attached to East Renfrewshire.

Playing together, they won four matches out of four on the first two days to help GB&I hold a commanding lead heading into the last-day singles.

Robertson capped a superb performance by recording a 3&1 success over Brian Bergstol in the concluding head-to-head matches.

Hay went down 4&3 to Jesse Droemer in his game but had more than done his bit by that stage in the biennial contest.

"I am absolutely amazed by the quality of the team I have had this week,” said Scott, the general manager at Dumbarnie Links.

“The strength and depth. Even though on paper we weren't as strong, the heart in the team is tremendous. I am delighted for them."

Scott took inspiration from the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team who ended 11 years of hurt in Lahinch last month.

"Staying where your feet are is a great expression I got from Dean Robertson,” he added. “Don't look behind or ahead, just stay where you are.

“We could have easily taken the eye off the ball. I gave them a challenge to win every singles match.

“If you focus purely on your own match then you should get the result. If there's apathy before you know it the Americans have you by the throat. I spoke to them last night, gave them a hard message.

“We saw it in Medinah, the Walker Cup you can't forecast anything you have to prepare yourself. It was about staying with the process, believing in yourself. We wanted ten points out there but so thrilled for all of these guys."

Robertson, who has been in good form this season on the HotelPlanner Tour, was GB&I’s standout performer over the three days.

"Happy with that,” he said of his contribution. “I played for Scotland in the Home Internationals years ago and managed to get six out of six! It was in my head to get full points again, I knew I was playing well."
