Forgotten Scotland Euro 2024 man hailed 'impactful attacker' as former Celtic star seals transfer

MLS move for 29-year-old international forward

A Scotland international whose last cap came two years ago has been hailed as an "impactful attacker" following the completion of a transfer move.

Lewis Morgan has spent the past six years in the Major Soccer League since leaving Celtic to sign for Inter Miami in 2000. He moved to New York Red Bulls a year later, where he spent four years before joining San Diego in December 2025.

The 29-year-old is on the move again after completing a switch to Toronto FC as he looks to rediscover the form that brought him Scotland recognition under Steve Clarke.

“We are happy to add Lewis at this time," said Toronto FC general manager Jason Hernandez. "He has established himself as an impactful attacker in the Eastern Conference over the past several seasons. His flexibility to play across multiple positions in the attack will be a valuable quality for our group moving forward.”

Morgan has been capped seven times for Scotland and was a member of Clarke's Euro 2024 squad, where he made one appearance off the bench in the 1-0 defeat by Hungary. His last international appearance was a 22-minute substitute appearance in a goalless draw with Portugal at Hampden in the Nations League in October 2024.

Morgan has made a name for himself in the MLS, scoring 24 goals and registering 20 assists across a total of 136 league matches. He was named 2024 MLS Comeback Player of the Year after bouncing back from an injury-riddled 2023 with a 13-goal season for the New York Red Bulls.

Morgan originally progressed through the youth ranks at Rangers before joining St Mirren at the age of 17. After 29 goals and 23 assists in 118 appearances for the Buddies, Morgan joined Celtic in January 2018.

He registered two goals and three assists in 31 appearances for the Hoops and also spent time on loan with Sunderland, where he tallied two goals and four assists, before moving to the USA.
