Rangers setback as £6.5m deal collapses at 11th hour while Celtic agree £22m transfer

Rangers pull out of move for PSV winger as Celtic cash in on midfielder

Rangers will not be signing Couhaib Driouech amid reports that the move has collapsed at the eleventh hour.

The PSV Eindhoven winger was in the stands at Ibrox on Thursday night as Rangers crashed out of the Europa League following a 1-1 draw with Polish side Jagiellonia Białystok.

The 24-year-old Moroccan was expected to become the club's 10th signing of the summer on a four-year contract after an agreement was reached over a £6.5million transfer.

However, the deal is now off due to an injury that was discovered during his medical. Rangers reportedly pulled out of the move due to concern surrounding the immediate availability of the player with focus now shifting to securing other targets.

Former Hearts left-back James Penrice is said to be close to joining from AEK Athens on loan while Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy is wanted as a replacement for the injured Youssef Chermiti.

Quality reinforcements are required at Rangers after manager Derek McInnes failed to win any of his opening four matches in charge.

"I do think we're lacking a cutting edge," McInnes admitted after the draw with Jagiellonia that saw Rangers drop into a Conference League play-off against Czech side Jablonec.

"Obviously, losing Youssef doesn’t help matters. We are looking at a No.9 position as well in terms of trying to get somebody in. It's clear, I've been saying since we came in, we'd like to try and get good wingers to the club to try and bring that creativity. Because I think a club like Rangers, a team like Rangers certainly my team, is something that we'd like to try and address."

Meanwhile, Celtic have agreed to sell midfielder Arne Engels to West Ham for £22m after rejecting two previous bids.

The Belgium international is due to undergo a medical in London on Friday before completing a move that will break the record for the highest transfer fee paid by an English Championship club.

It is reported that Celtic will look to bring in an replacement for Engels depsite signing German Under-21 midfielder Mika Baur from Paderborn earlier this week. Hajduk Split's Niko Sigur and Torino's Gvidas Ginetis are said to be prime targets.
