Jon Rahm opens up on Ryder Cup and "working it out" over DP World Tour schedule

Spaniard says he might play in Irish Open later this year and also Dunhill Links

Jon Rahm is confident that he will be playing for Europe in next year’s Ryder Cup in Ireland after saying that he is working on reaching an agreement about his DP World Tour schedule.

The Spaniard is no longer looking at the possibility of taking legal action against fines and suspensions imposed on him for playing in LIV Golf events without an official release from the DP World Tour.

Rahm refused the terms of a deal accepted by eight LIV Golf players, including his Legion XIII team-mates Tyrrell Hatton, saying he didn’t want to be told to play in some additional events being requested.

Speaking in the build up to the 90th Masters at Augusta National on Tuesday, though, he sounded positive about soon being in a position where the path for him to play in the centenary edition of the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor would be clear.

“Like I said in the last few interviews, we keep talking about the DP World Tour and trying to figure out a solution that works best,” said the Spaniard, who has played in the last four Ryder Cups.

“I didn't think that going the legal route and going to court was good for anybody. So I have faith in us and the DP World Tour we're going to find a good solution for both of us.”

Asked if that meant he felt confident about being in the team that will be captained once again by Luke Donald, he replied: “Yes.”

‘I do intend to continue to support the DP World Tour’

Rahm, who is bidding to become a two-time Masters champion after his win in 2023, was later asked in a press conference if the situation needs to be resolved for him to play in a DP World Tour event.

“I truly don't know,” he said. “I'm not planning to play until September. So that's a bit of a positive. If I were unable right now, it doesn't matter since I'm not planning to tee it up until after August like I have done in my career.

“I do intend to continue to support the DP World Tour. I've been very thankful to be a member. I've been very thankful to support the Tour and play some wonderful events.

“The Irish Open has been very good to me, and I would love to make a return. Wentworth has been fantastic every single year, the Spanish Open, maybe even the Dunhill. We have some events like the French Open and the Omega. Those are events that I'd love to have the chance to play.”

Is he willing to compromise? “I think I already have,” he added. “We've already told them many times. We keep talking to them, and we keep trying to negotiate.

“We're going to work it out. It's going to work out. As of now, the DP World Tour is doing what they need to do and following the channels they need to follow, but I'm confident this will be sorted out before I tee it up in September.”
