St Andrews losing long-time head greenkeeper in build up to The 155th Open

Gordon McKie is leaving St Andrews Links Trust next month after more than 30 years

St Andrews is losing one of its head greenkeepers in the build up to next year’s 150th Open on the Old Course.

Gordon McKie, who was just the ninth ‘keeper of the green’ for the Old Course for a lengthy spell, announced his departure in a post on social media.

McKie’s recent role for St Andrews Links Trust hasn’t been related to the courses, meaning there will no impact in that respect.

The statement read: “I want to share that I’ll be leaving St Andrews Links in mid‑October after 30 years.

“It’s been an incredible journey and I’m proud of everything we’ve achieved - from preparing The Old Course for the 2010, 2015 and 2022 Open Championships to being part of so many projects that helped shape the Links.

“I’ve also really valued the chance to help recruit, train and support the next generation of greenkeepers.

“Grateful for the people, the experiences and the memories. Looking forward to the next chapter.”

McKie started his career as the deputy head greenkeeper at Tain from 1990-1995 before joining St Andrews Links Trust.

He had spells as head greenkeeper on both the Eden and New Courses before taking over as Course Manager of the Old Course in 2007 and staying in that role until 2023.

Over the past few years, McKie, a national board director for greenkeeping body BIGGA, has served as greenkeeping operations manager for St Andrews Links Trust.
