Under the Radar: Susan Bear

The latest project from multi-talented artist Susan Bear sees her return to her keyboard roots, write Olaf Furniss and Derick Mackinnon
Susan Bear began playing piano at the age of four, by 11 she had commandeered her mother’s computer to make her own recordings, and by high school she was playing in numerous bands.
A multi-instrumentalist, producer and sound designer, she has worked with roll call of Scottish indie royalty, including Pictish Trail, Martha Ffion, Sacred Paws, The Pastels and Malcolm Middleton, not to mention being part of the Hen Hoose Collective.
However, her current musical venture sees her return to her keyboard and technological roots, making use of the facilities at Glasgow Library of Synthesized Sound, where she also works.
Drawing on the vintage synths in the collection, she has released three atmospheric instrumental tracks in as many months, with a fourth single, Empty Space, due out on 11 August. Composed and produced entirely as a solo project, the latter also features Bear’s vocals, albeit using a pitched down effect.
Her next live outing is for Snack Magazine’s All Dayer on 16 August as part of the Govanhill Festival. She also plays Aberdeen Queer Arts Festival on 5 November and has an album out on Lost Map in the new year, see www.susanbear.com
