The new HBO Harry Potter series will begin streaming later this year, with Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin playing Harry Potter.

A new teaser trailer for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has given fans their first proper look around Hogwarts.

Adapted from JK Rowling’s first novel in the best-selling series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in the trailer we see young Scottish star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, trying on the sorting hat and making his Quidditch debut.

As part of the new introduction to the characters, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger also get their own moments. Played by Alastair Stout, Ron has a chaotic meal with his family as his letter arrives, while Arabella Stout as Hermione attempts to make friends on the Hogwarts Express.

There is also a glimpse into the Gryffindor boys dormitory, Harry trying on his invisibility cloak and more, with the new footage confirming that there will be moments beyond what we’ve seen in the books or films.

A second season, covering Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, has already been confirmed with production under way.

There is certainly more depth to the Wizarding World provided here as well. Janet McTeer, as Minerva McGonagall, takes centre stage in the trailer, stepping into the late Dame Maggie Smith’s shoes.

In a scene with Harry in her office, she informs him that she “expects him to work hard”, while making friends and finding new interests. Appearing to struggle with this, however, he states: "Everyone thinks I'm this great wizard… but I don't really know anything."

Harry can expect more bother from Paapa Essiedu’s Severus Snape who tells him: "Let's hope you show some talent on the Quidditch pitch. You've certainly not exhibited any in here."

While John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore is cheerful as he welcomes pupils, later in the teaser he also rather gravely tells McGonagall: “We can't protect them, we can only prepare them."

Those who have read the book - as Hermione hints when she asks the boys “Don't you two read?” - will recognise many of these moments, as the trailer comes to a close, promising action and excitement for the trio’s first year at Hogwarts.
